California corrections sees major cuts |

SACRAMENTO, CA - The first of some 3,500 job cuts at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is beginning with the loss of over 400 jobs at the agency's Sacramento headquarters. "The truth is, we're in a budget crisis and the governor believes the cuts start from the top and we agree so we're gonna get this done," said agency secretary Matthew Cate. The cuts are expected to save $30 million dollars in the state's general fund. Cate said the cuts will push authority down to lower positions and demote many staffers who will still have the same level of responsibility. "We'll see cuts to prison administrators and parole administrators and also healthcare," said Cate. Pink slips went out just before the holiday weekend and staff members said it was the talk of the day at CDCR's headquarters. Read More. |
