A federal inmate who escaped from custody in lower downtown Denver Tuesday was recaptured Thursday morning after a high-speed chase began when he was spotted in the area of Interstate 70 and Federal.
United States Marshals had information that the escapee might be in the area of I-70 and Federal and staked it out. The inmate, identified as Joseph Belville, 33, was able to escape approaching Marshals and carjacked a pickup truck behind Mc Coy's Restaurant at I-70 and Federal Boulevard around 10:15 a.m., police said.
Belville was pursued by scores of law enforcement officers as he headed in a circular route on I-76, I-270 and I-70, finally winding his way down Federal and around Invesco Field's parking lots. He then headed north on Federal Boulevard, with a number of police and U.S. Marshal cars in pursuit.
The chase ended around 10:45 a.m. at 24th Avenue and Lowell Boulevard when a vehicle driven by a U.S. Marshal crashed into the stolen pickup to stop it. A police officer was also reportedly injured a block away after his vehicle was hit during the chase. His injuries were not believed to be serious.
"We saw at least a dozen police cars and the actual crash," an eyewitness said. "The officers got out with their guns pointed at the truck."
Denver police took Belville away.
The original driver of the pickup truck was stabbed in the leg during the carjacking, police said. The man was taken to Denver Health Medical Center for treatment.
In addition to Denver, officers involved in the chase came from Adams County, Commerce City, Wheat Ridge and Lakewood.
Belville escaped from a Washington County Sheriff's Office van Tuesday, leaving his black and white striped uniform and was last seen running away in his boxer shorts. The U.S. Marshals Service periodically contracts with local jails for housing federal prisoners.
United States Attorney John Suthers and U.S. Marshal Ed Zahran praised the hard work that led to the fugitive's capture. In addition to the many deputy United States Marshals, the Denver Police Department played an integral role in finding and arresting Belville, Suthers said.
New charges related to the escape are presently being prepared by the United States Attorney's Office.
