Officials try to stymie prison gang's reach

When two Nuestra Familia leaders from Salinas were given lengthy federal prison sentences last week, prosecutors harbored no illusion that it would mean an end to the gang.

The challenge was trying to stay a step ahead of a criminal organization that thrives inside maximum-security prison walls.

Government officials have learned a lot about the Nuestra Familia's continuing activities since 2004, when the gang's California generals and captains began to be scattered across the U.S. federal prison system as a result of the FBI's Operation Black Widow.
