DEDHAM, MA, June 6, 2011 – Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti’s highly successful “Are You OK?” program for the elderly recently recorded its 77th save, and the sheriff is urging more people to sign up for it. “The “Are You OK?” program provides someone to call you on the phone every day to check on your well-being,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “Even if you never need them to get help for you, it’s comforting to know someone is making sure you’re all right on a daily basis.” Each day, an “Are You OK?” officer places calls to people enrolled in the program at a mutually agreed-upon time. If the enrollee does not answer the phone or otherwise indicates that something is wrong, the officer can summon emergency medical help immediately. A nationally recognized program, “Are You OK?” was introduced into Norfolk County by Sheriff Bellotti in 2001. It is free of charge to the participants. Since its introduction, Sheriff Bellotti’s program has summoned help for 77 people in need. Two years ago, Fallon Ambulance Service joined forces with Sheriff Bellotti to keep the program going when it was threatened by budget cuts. “Fallon Ambulance continues to be an integral partner, and we all are grateful that they stepped up to the plate to donate their service and expertise,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “The beauty of this program is that it helps elderly people maintain their independence in their own homes without sacrificing their safety,” he said. “It also provides peace of mind to younger loved ones who worry about their elder relatives.” The program currently serves approximately 300 enrollees each day across Norfolk County. “We have the capability to serve so many more. I hope more people will take advantage of this program,” Sheriff Bellotti said.
