Seriously, why would you want to be a corrections officer at the Adult Correctional Institutions? The work involves you and your coworkers spending your entire shift outnumbered and surrounded by criminals, many of them with records of violence, some of whom might even throw their own feces at you. But Patrick M. Smith, who attended a recent Corrections Department information session for prospective officers, said that’s the point. “Camaraderie under high-stress conditions,” he said when asked why he’d applied. An Army veteran, he said the strongest friendships he’s had in his life are from his time in the military, and he was looking for a job that would give him that same sense of responsibility to the job and his comrades that he had in the service. “I keep in touch with them,” he said of his friends from the military. “And, you’ll never have that kind of connection in civilian life.” Smith was one of about 2,600 who have, so far, applied to be members of next year’s training class for corrections officers at the ACI. He and about 50 others attended the first information session, the first step in a process that will winnow the field down to the approximately 50 or 60, depending on the state budget, who will be chosen. Starting pay is $45,806 a year, about $875 a week, but with overtime and holiday pay, that can go up. There’s also a health plan and, for now, a pension. For many, that sense of belonging that Smith spoke of is a big benefit as well. Tara Barbosa, who has worked at the intake center for 13 years, said that feeling is more than everyone’s your friend. She may have some coworkers she doesn’t get along with personally, but Barbosa said she has no doubts about their professionalism. “When something goes down, everybody is there for you,” she said. “If you’re in a fight, I know I can count on them.” Read More. |
