BELMONT — When Lorna Williams-Goldstein volunteered to make blankets for the children at the Southern Tier Child Advocacy Center, she knew how they felt and said she just wanted to help. Williams-Goldstein is an inmate in the Allegany County jail. A few weeks ago, Sgt. Dawn Bentley who oversees the blanket program at the jail asked for volunteers to hand-sew blankets for the children at the Advocacy Center. Out of the 20-to-30 women who are routinely held at the jail, five volunteered. Two were soon transferred out of the facility, leaving only three – Williams-Goldstein, Priscilla Ordiway and a third woman who preferred to remain anonymous.

Shannon Ozzella, county crime victim services coordinator with the county District Attorney’s Office, and Karen Hill, director of the CAC said they want people to know about the inmates’ generosity. Hill said the blankets are a big part of making the abused and molested children who come to the CAC feel comfortable and secure. The inmates who sewed the blankets and Deputy Jason Cole and Sgt. Shawn Grusendorf from the county Department Sheriff’s Association Union Local 3989 were recognized Friday. The union donated $350 to the program to buy material.

Union Treasurer Grusendorf said the money came from fund-raising events and dues. In 2010 alone, the union contributed over $10,000 to area charities and children’s programs. “This (donation) is just something we like to do. We deal with a lot of these kids and we just want to help,” Grusendorf said.

Hill said that in the last four years, the center has dealt with more than 860 abused, molested and battered children living in Allegany and Cattaraugus counties. There are centers in both Wellsville and Olean. Even though they received 50 blankets a few months ago, only three are left between both centers.
