BENNINGTON -- Two men accused of cashing a check intended for use in transitional housing pleaded not guilty to felony charges Monday in Bennington Superior Court Criminal Division. Raymond Campbell, 37, pleaded not guilty to forgery, while Billy J. Stanley, 36, pleaded not guilty to being an accessory before the fact. Campbell was released on conditions, while $500 bail was put on Stanley because he is on probation. According to an affidavit by Bennington Police Detective David Rowland, on April 13 he spoke to Department of Corrections (DOC) Probation and Parole Officer Ryan Nolan about a missing check. Nolan said the DOC had mailed a check to Stanley for $625, with the idea it would be given by Stanley to a landlord for transitional housing. Nolan said it was sent to Stanley’s old address on South Street, but Nolan learned it had been cashed at the Bank of Bennington. Nolan said the signature on the back didn’t appear to be Stanley’s, and it also bore Campbell’s signature as a co-endorsement. He said Stanley denied knowing anything about the check, and only knew Campbell through a relative. According to the affidavit, Stanley appeared upset over the matter when questioned.
