CO receives award for service on vacation |

OGDENSBURG — A corrections officer at Riverview Correctional Facility recently received a medal of merit from the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision for heroic actions while on vacation in Las Vegas. Jean F. Gagnon was among four correctional employees to receive the 2011 Medals of Merit for humanitarian and courageous acts at the 12th annual Memorial Service and Medals Ceremony held June 14 at the department's Albany training academy. State Commissioner Brian Fischer and Elizabeth Glazer, deputy secretary to the governor for public safety, awarded the medals. Peter K. Cutler, state Department of Correctional Services director of public information, attempted to arrange an interview with Mr. Gagnon, who declined to speak with a reporter. "He's a private guy," Mr. Cutler said. "For him, the ceremony itself was too much attention." According to merit citation documentation provided by Mr. Cutler, Mr. Gagnon's vacation was anything but relaxing, as he helped the Las Vegas Police Department apprehend two people responsible for a homicide in a wooded area near Hoover Dam. Mr. Cutler said on Dec. 23, while vacationing in Las Vegas, Mr. Gagnon discovered the charred body of a woman in a wooded area near Hoover Dam. Read More. |
