TRENTON — State Department of Transportation crews are getting a hand picking up tons of litter left on the side of state highways from 100 inmates through the joint “Clean-up New Jersey” program run with the Department of Corrections. Ten cleanup details of 10 supervised inmates each have removed 140,000 pounds of litter from state highways, starting in late May, augmenting the DOT’s own efforts. Each Corrections Department detail is focusing on litter and other maintenance work during the 10-week period that ends in August. They supplement the DOT’s 420 maintenance workers who are divided into 62 crews statewide. These workers mow grass, fill potholes, paint over graffiti, cut tree limbs, remove litter and do other work. Read More. |
