Three Talbot County lawmen charged in a federal corruption probe will be released from custody this afternoon on their own recognizance.

Prosecutors did not seek detention for Maj. Jeff Sivell, the Talbot County Sheriff's Office investigator, Charlie Stephens, a part-time deputy sheriff and Alvin Malone, a former Talbotton police officer. The men were, however, required to surrender any badges and firearms as part of their pre-trial release.

Wearing blue jail jumpsuits and handcuffs, the three defendants appeared before U.S. Magistrate Stephen Hyles this afternoon and pleaded not guilty to one count each of extortion by a public official. They were returned to the Muscogee County Jail after the hearing and were to be released after signing unsecured bonds of $10,000.

Indicted by a grand jury last week, the officers were arrested Wednesday and charged with extorting money from undercover federal agents and other persons cooperating with the FBI. They face up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

Also arrested in Wednesday's bust was Michael Gamble, a county jailer. He was charged with two counts of bribery and one count each of computer invasion of privacy and disclosure of techniques used to ensure security or privacy, said Scott Dutton of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
