TALLAHASSEE -- The Department of Corrections has cut 111 positions in its Tallahassee central office, resulting in 48 layoffs. Announced Tuesday and effective June 30, the layoffs will save the agency $6 million, said spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger. The pink slips hit senior attorneys, food-service specialists, secretaries and clerks. Officials are helping some find vacant jobs within the department or other state agencies, Plessinger said. Three already have been offered jobs in vacant positions. The cuts represent a fraction of state jobs eliminated in the 2011-12 budget that Gov. Rick Scott signed May 26 in a campaign-style event that celebrated his record $615 million in vetoes. The budget eliminates 4,500 state-worker positions, about 2,000 of which are filled. Other hard-hit agencies include the departments of Children and Families and Juvenile Justice. Read More. |
