Unsung heroes of justice system honored |

WARWICK — Officials from the Department of Corrections gathered at the Noel Judicial Complex Tuesday to honor people who work with the department, not for it. The event, which featured Governor Chafee, U.S. Attorney Peter F. Neronha and Chief District Court Judge Jeanne E. LaFazia, recognized the agencies and organizations that work with the department’s probation and parole units. LaFazia praised both state employees and those who worked with them, saying that their best successes are invisible: the ex-convict who doesn’t get arrested again, the one who doesn’t violate her parole. “But that doesn’t meant they should be unrecognized or uncelebrated,” she said. The recipient list showed the increasing level of cooperation between the state’s local police departments and parole and probation. Individual police officers from West Warwick, Cranston, Warwick, Pawtucket, Newport, Providence, Woonsocket and East Providence were cited. All the corrections speakers talked about how local police have a greater understanding of their communities and are valuable in monitoring those who have been released. The police, in turn, said probation and parole officers often provided valuable information that led to arrests in serious crimes. There was non-investigatory aid as well. Kevin Mulcahey, who supervises parole operations in Providence and East Bay, told how East Providence Detective Joel Camara was able to arrange for meeting space for parole and probation officers in his town after state budget cuts forced the agency to close its offices there.
