County sets budget at $300.4 million |

The Mohave County supervisors approved Tuesday the tentative 2011-12 fiscal year budget. The board approved the county’s proposed $300.4 million tentative overall budget. The county’s revenue is projected at $84 million and its budgeted expenses are also projected at $84 million. The contingency fund is estimated to be $11.1 million. The board set hearings for Aug. 1 to adopt the final budget. Mohave County Manager Ron Walker again said the budget is balanced despite possible shifts to the state. There is still talk of the state department of corrections transferring Mohave County prison inmates to the county jail. Finance Director John Timko said one issue is the rising cost of the Arizona Health Cost Containment Care System because of the depressed economy. Despite no planned layoffs or furlough days, county employees will not see a pay or merit raise for the fourth year in a row. The county initiated a hiring freeze in 2007. District 3 Sup. Buster Johnson questioned the $4,000 for the county’s annual employee picnic. The Lake Havasu City supervisor asked why private money could not fund the picnic. Timko countered of the possible inappropriate appearance of a company, who may do business with the county, donating cash for the picnic. Some companies do donate raffle prizes. Both District 2 Sup. Tom Sockwell and District 1 Sup. Gary Watson also said the amount is small for a picnic that keeps up the morale of county employees who have not had raises in four years.
