Corrections officials say they don't need bigger budget

The Department of Corrections didn't request additional resources from the Legislative Executive Board last week even though state lawmakers said they would be supportive of any needs after the slaying of a correctional officer earlier this year.

Instead, department officials told the board during a briefing that they already had taken care of any necessary changes using leftover money from the fiscal year 2011 budget. The DOC spent $222,500 for additional equipment at the penitentiary and $117,000 for three correctional officers.

Ronald Johnson, 63, was killed April 12 at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls in what authorities have described as a failed escape attempt by two inmates. Rodney Berget and Eric Robert are charged with first-degree murder, and prosecutors say they will seek the death penalty.
