AUGUSTA, Ga. -- An Augusta family is anxiously waiting to hear how their son is doing after he was stabbed in the chest.

Terrell Polen is serving time in Baldwin State Prison near Milledgeville. His family says all night long, they didn't know if he was dead or alive.

Terrell's mother Sheila Polen says her son is serving time for making some bad decisions. She understands that means he's lost a lot of his rights. But tonight she's asking about her rights as his mother?

"Still waiting for the warden to call me -- the warden still hasn't called me," she said.

Sheila has been making frantic phone calls for more than 24 hours. It all started when she started receiving texts from an inmate in Baldwin State Prison, where her son is currently incarcerated.

One text reads, "I don't know what's going on, but something ain't rite."

"Later on [Monday] evening," Sheila said, "I got a call and text stating that my son had passed away. Didn't know if he was on life support, didn't know if he was dead or alive. I again, immediately, called Baldwin State Prison to check the status of my son. They gave me the run around, patched me to this person, patched me to that person, nobody told me nothing."

Terrell Polen grew up in Augusta, where he was arrested back in 2006 for forgery, fraud and armed robbery. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison.

Sheila says she continued calling the prison into Monday evening.

"I said, 'Just please tell me whether he's dead or alive. Or if he's OK.' They told me to call back during business hours," she said. "I kept saying to myself, 'Business hours? Business hours? I'm his mother!'"

Finally, Tuesday morning, a deputy allowed Sheila to talk to her son in the hospital over speaker phone.

"He said, 'Hey Mom. I'm ok, Mom. They tried to kill me. I had open heart surgery. But I'm ok. Don't cry.''"

It's not Terrell's first time being attacked in prison. Last year, his sister says he was stabbed nine times in the back. That's why he was transferred to Baldwin State Prison near Milledgeville.

"What were they doing to protect him?" Sheila asked. "How did this happen? How did this other person get a weapon to stab my son in the heart?"

Sheila received another text Tuesday reading, "They say he's in bad condition, but he's alive. Don't worry -- he's a soldier."
