Residents concerned over details of new state prison |

Concerns over the construction of a new state prison in Skippack brought approximately 20 residents to Wednesday's township meeting. Township Manager Ted Locker said one of the residents spoke during the public meeting, asking the supervisors to support a proposal to keep the Graterford bridge open. According to Locker, the resident argued that closing the bridge — near Route 29 — would force all traffic to the new prison to utilize the Route 73 entrance in Skippack. Structural issues have forced the implementation of weight restrictions on the bridge, according to Locker. "The residents argued that closing the bridge would create additional traffic in the township," he said. Locker said he was planning to a appear at a nearby meeting of the Pennsylvania Department of General Services and ask — on behalf of the supervisors — to change the footprint of the new prison. Currently, the design of the new facility is too close to residential and commercial properties on Skippack Pike and Cressman Road, according to the manager. Read More. |
