Incident at Garner Correctional Institution |

At approx 12:15 this afternoon, Friday, July 15, 2011 a fight erupted among inmates in one of the housing units within the Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, CT. As a group of inmates were being brought into the housing unit to utilize the showers, one of them was attacked by another inmate with whom he had a prior dispute. In all, six inmates became involved. The fight was quickly ended by responding staff. A total of six staff reported injuries, most were back and shoulder sprains. State police were contacted, and are expected to press criminal charges. The facility maintained normal operations throughout, and did not go into lockdown. The Garner Correctional Institution is not slated to close, nor is it being affected by layoffs. |
