An Odom Correctional Facility employee has been suspended as an investigation continues as to why a man with charges pending was released from prison rather than into the custody of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office. North Carolina Department of Corrections Public Affairs Director Keith Acree said this morning James Troy Smith Jr., correctional case manager for Odom, had been suspended after a Weldon man, Antwaan Deandre Clanton, 38, was released Thursday despite having charges of felony breaking and entering and larceny hanging over his head that had not been resolved in court. Clanton was arrested the next day and eventually charged with rape and kidnapping relating to a reported assault Friday afternoon. “He should have been turned over to the local authorities,” Acree said. Acree said normally under these circumstances the authorities seeking custody of an inmate due to be released — in this case, the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office — would file a detainer with the department seeking custody of the inmate upon release. However, no detainer was filed in this case. “But our staff is supposed to check court records and other sources to see if there are any pending charges,” Acree said. An investigation was initiated Monday by the department, Acree said, which so far has led to Smith’s suspension late Monday evening. The investigation is ongoing. Read More. |
