LIBERTY, Ind. -- Union County Community Corrections will tackle some chores normally done by the Union County Highway Department, a move that should allow highway workers to focus on road repairs. Community Corrections director Ford Hoskins and supervisor Dennis Spaeth agreed to work with the highway department, but told commissioners Monday that some of their workers already are doing jobs such as picking up trash along roadways. Highway supervisor Wanda Hartman will prepare a list of needed work and fax it to the Community Corrections office, so correction crews can focus their time on priority projects. "It will help with county financial constraints and make the county look better," Commissioner Tony Talbert said. Individuals who are sentenced by the court usually are required to perform a number of hours of community service as a part of their probation. The Community Corrections Department lines up the tasks, provides equipment and transportation, and supervises the work. Community Corrections operates under state grant funds and has both juvenile and adult work teams. "We've been working heavily in West College Corner recently," Hoskins said. "The town council requested help with several projects." Community Corrections workers cleaned up the former bank property in the center of West College Corner, painted at the Grove park, and mowed and trimmed around school playgrounds, Spaeth said. "We pick up trash a lot. You could pick up trash every day in this county. There's a lot of trash at railroad crossings," Spaeth said. "We pick up tires, too." Read More. |
