— KEYSER, W.Va. — Sheriff Craig Fraley and Tara Hockady, director of Community Corrections, had to provide answers to the Mineral County commissioners Tuesday after Jason Imes, 20, of Ridgeley, walked out of the detention center last Thursday. Imes was reporting to the Community Corrections Office for a work detail that day. At the commission meeting Tuesday, President Cindy Pyles said Judge Phil Jordan had sent a letter wanting to know the reason for the escape. “We were completely shorthanded,” said Fraley. When Imes was brought to the detention center, Hockady said she got reports that he seemed agitated. Upon his arrival, Sheriff’s Deputy K.S. McKone was sent to the detention center to detain him. After asking personnel at the detention center to put him in a jail cell, McKone dealt with another person in custody and returned a few phone messages before he was to transport Imes to the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail. While McKone was on the phone, the administrative secretary stepped away from her desk to help another employee and Imes took his personal belongings from the desk and let himnever put into a cell and was not handcuffed while he waited in the hallway of the detention center. “If he’d have been in his cell like policy says, he wouldn’t have left,” said Fraley. Both Fraley and Hockady said that the problem is lack of trained staff. Hockady said at their next meeting she would bring up the issue and that it could possibly be resolved by Community Corrections providing a trained officer when transporting clients to the detention center. Hockady added there does need to be someone with “arresting authority” present in the event that a client tries to do something to one of the staff. “Things happen, now we need to do something,” said Pyles. Also present at the meeting were members of the Mineral County Development Authority, who after a 45-minute executive session announced that the broadband project is proceeding as planned. “It’s moving along and proceeding at a fast pace,” said Commissioner Janice LaRue. County coordinator Mike Bland said the broadband company would have access to the Pinnacle Tower for antenna space. Click here to Read More. |
