Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick was set to be released on Tuesday in Michigan after serving time for violating his probation in the 2008 case that cost him his political career. clearpxl The Democrat and son of former U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick was to begin supervised release a little over a year of a five -year sentence. Officials have allowed him to complete his sentence in Dallas, where his family now lives. News of Kilpatrick's release was first announced early this month on his Twitter account, which is being maintained by someone in his family. Records with the Michigan Department of Corrections show that the former mayor could have been released as early as July 24 this year. According to WDIV, Kilpatrick will have 24 hours to leave Michigan, where he will return next year for a trial on separate charges of corruption. Kilpatrick resigned in 2008 after pleading guilty to obstruction of justice and assault. He had faced 10 felony charges in two criminal cases. The 41-year-old was indicted for perjury and obstruction of justice after text messages between him and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, revealed that they had both lied under oath during a trial to cover up their extramarital affair.
