People who may be concerned about convicted sex offenders living or working in their communities are being urged by Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti to sign up for his email alert program to be notified when an offender takes up residence in the community. “The state Sex Offender Registry Board maintains a list of Level 3 offenders – considered to carry the highest risk of reoffending -- as required by law. Working in conjunction with the board, we created a program that allows the public to register with us to receive direct email alerts whenever a Level 3 offender lists his residence in their town,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “As an additional public service, we carry on our website a complete list of Norfolk County residents, categorized by town, who are registered as Level 3 offenders,” he said. To enroll in Sheriff Bellotti’s program or to simply learn more about it, visit the Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office website at www.norfolksheriff.comwww.norfolksheriff.com and click on the “Sex Offender Registry” heading. Approximately 1,300 people representing all 28 Norfolk County communities currently receive the alerts. State law requires that people convicted of sex offenses must register with their local police department after their convictions. When a convicted sex offender finishes serving his sentence at the Norfolk County Correctional Center, members of Sheriff Bellotti’s staff drive him straight to his local police station to ensure that he complies with the law. In accordance with the statute governing the Sex Offender Registry Board, Sheriff Bellotti’s email alert program only lists Level 3 offenders. Certain information about Level 2 offenders also is available to the public, but must be obtained by contacting your local police department. |
