County poised to name jail study committee |

A panel of Dutchess County lawmakers, corrections officials and others in county government are expected to begin work soon on a study addressing possible expansion and other issues at the county jail. At a meeting tonight, the Legislature’s Public Safety Committee voted unanimously to authorize Legislature Chairman Robert Rolison, R-City of Poughkeepsie, to appoint the 10-member Jail Study Advisory Committee, to be chaired by Public Safety Committee Chairman Kenneth Roman. Rolison said the committee would explore “all the issues surrounding our jail population” and make its recommendations to a consulting firm that he said would be hired before the end of the year to examine the possible expansion of the jail. The facility on North Hamilton Street in the City of Poughkeepsie has a capacity of 292 inmates, but on a typical day, an additional 165 to 175 must be housed at other facilities.
