SANTA ANA – It was a secret which if let out, he feared, could get him killed.

Theo Lacy Jail inmate John Chamberlain's fears were realized Oct. 5, 2006, when he was brutally beaten and killed by inmates after the secret got distorted and spread among the 146 inmates of Barracks F West.

Prosecutors say some inmates targeted Chamberlain, 41, because they believed he was a child molester – perceived as the worst kind of inmate in jail culture. He had been awaiting trial on a misdemeanor charge of possessing child pornography.

Punched, kicked and stomped on, Chamberlain was found unconscious. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The beating, which triggered several investigations, occurred about 68 feet from where one sheriff's deputy admitted he was watching "COPS" on television and was followed by allegations – that were never proven – that deputies helped set up the attack.

Now, nearly five years later, the first trial of its kind in the county involving a jailhouse beating death of an inmate allegedly at the hands of several other inmates, starts Monday.

Prosecutors say Chamberlain was beaten by 20 to 25 inmates but they charged those who they could prove in court killed Chamberlain.
