Merced County keeping 12 corrections divisions jobs

County leaders restored 12 positions to the sheriff's correctional division during Tuesday's Board of Supervisors meeting β€” an action that could return bookings to the Main Jail.

Bookings were moved to the John Latorraca Correctional Center on July 29 because of staffing issues, but the less-equipped facility has proven to be problematic for law enforcement agencies throughout Merced County.

Chief Norm Andrade of the Merced Police Department noted that, on several occasions, his agency has experienced delays of three to four hours.Chief Richard Hawthorne of the Atwater Police Department has faced similar issues. He and Andrade were bothered by how the delays were keeping officers from their beats.

Sheriff's officials will meet this morning to determine whether the added positions will be enough to move bookings back to the Main Jail, said Sheriff Mark Pazin.

"That's the path of least resistance for everybody," Pazin said, adding that the longer booking times are unfortunate, but not unique to Merced County.

"If you go to L.A., San Joaquin County, bookings can take the same amount of time as we have had to witness here," he said. "It's a sign of the financial times."

Funding for the 12 reinstated positions β€” eight correctional officers, two security system operators and two correctional sergeants β€” came from Assembly Bill 109 funding, sheriff's trust funds and additional county revenues.
