R.I. CO start campaign to avert closing of medium-security unit |

The union representing Rhode Island correctional officers announced that it has launched a campaign to avert the closing of the Donald Price Medium Security Prison at the Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston. “We are launching this campaign because our elected officials — especially the General Assembly — continue to put money before public safety,” David Mellon, president of the Rhode Island Brotherhood of Correctional Officers, said in a news release. “A pattern has emerged in this state where saving a few bucks is more important than the safety of Rhode Islanders. It’s time they reverse these harmful policies.” State Department of Corrections officials said in July that they had started to plan for closing the medium-security prison, a provision required by the fiscal 2012 state budget. Leading up to General Assembly passage of the budget, some lawmakers said they wanted to close the aging facility and transfer its inmates to other areas of the ACI. Read More. |
