A former Westmoreland County jail guard has agreed to testify against three corrections officers charged with beating an inmate two years ago. Christopher Pickard, 26, of West Leechburg was ordered on Tuesday to serve one year on probation for his role in the assault of former New Kensington resident James Edwards. Pickard was one of four guards fired in the aftermath of an internal investigation into allegations of Edwards' beating and an alleged attempt to cover up the incident by jail staff. Edwards claimed that on June 6, 2009, guards Christopher Pickard and Steven Greenawalt, 28, Craig Petrus, 27, and Randy Miller, 28, all of North Huntingdon, took him into a counselor's office, slammed his head into a wall and beat him. Edwards, who had been jailed a few days earlier on a probation violation, claimed he suffered head, neck, rib and back injuries in the assault.
