Three inmates were injured in fights during an hour long power outage early Sunday in the South County Jail in Frostproof, Fla. One inmate was treated for bruises at Sebring Hospital and two were treated at the jail for minor injuries sustained in the fights, which started after a backup generator failed about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Polk County sheriff's officials said. No detention deputies were involved in the fighting at the jail, which houses 1,455 inmates, sheriff's spokeswoman Michal Shanley said. One interior window leading to an inmate classroom was damaged and bedsheets were set on fire, but no other damage was reported. "Some inmates tried to set their bed linens on fire using contraband lighters," Sheriff's Col. Grady Judd said. A special response team was called in as a precautionary measure, and a helicopter inspected the facility from above to ensure no security breach had occurred, Shanley said. "Once the lights came on, we did a head count and realized that everything was fine," Shanley said. The names of the injured inmates were not available, and possible charges have yet to be filed, pending completion of a report. The jail was built to house 1,008 inmates and typically has about 22 detention deputies on duty overnight, although the exact number of deputies on duty was not known. The jail had been running on emergency generators since Friday night, when it lost power because of Hurricane Charley. Its two generators are typically checked on a weekly basis, Judd said. "But they don't get a real workout until there's an actual emergency," he said. |
