BAYBORO — The state Division of Prisons evacuated 572 medium security inmates and most of the staff from Pamlico Correctional Institution here Saturday after high winds from Hurricane Irene damaged its roof and rain came pouring into 66-person H-Pod.

Inmates with just their mattresses and the clothes on their back, were loaded on 17 corrections department busses during the height of the storm Saturday, said Faye Daniels, superintendent.

“The guys who came in with the busses had to cut trees blocking the road to get them out,” Daniels said. The prison is about a mile down Third Street in Bayboro and about 18 miles east of New Bern.

Pamela Walker, director of external affairs for the N.C. Department of Correction, was in Bayboro Tuesday with N.C. Sec. of Correction Alvin Keller and said, “I can’t begin to describe what an incredible undertaking it was.”

Walker said state corrections department personnel moved about 1,900 inmates from threatened Eastern North Carolina prisons in the path of the storm including those in Hyde and Tyrrell counties. They were taken to state prisons in Nashville, Salisbury, Maxton, and Raleigh.

Keller said as soon as the inmates arrived at their destination they were allowed to call their families to let them know they were safe.

Walker said Hyde and Tyrrell prisons were evacuated Friday in advance of the storm. Hyde, because history showed it would be surrounded by water and Tyrrell because it is prone to flood.

There had been no history of storm damage problems at the Pamlico facility, which opened in 1998 as a private prison owned and operated by Corrections Corporation of America and in October 2000 the N.C. Department of Correction assumed operational management.
