Pontiac MI— Macomb may be wary, but Oakland County appears ready to jump on the state of Michigan's offer to house minimum-security inmates in exchange for some revenue. Oakland officials say they hope to finalize an agreement in the coming weeks that's expected to bring in $1 million for the county over three budget years while helping the state reduce its prison operation costs. "We're still talking but it's progressing forward," said Oakland County Undersheriff Mike McCabe. "It's a win for the state and a win for the county." In recent weeks, state corrections officials have toured the east annex of Oakland County's jail, which is currently housing inmates, as well as three facilities at the Frank Grennen detention center in Auburn Hills. The complex on Brown Road closed a couple years ago due to budget cuts. McCabe said if the sheriff's office enters into a contract with the Department of Corrections, it will be reviewed by board committees and go before the full board for approval. If approved, the leasing plan could be implemented by January. There are about 450 available beds between the facilities. Read More. |
