Published: 09/12/2011

(Concord, NH) The New Hampshire Department of Corrections announced that the New Hampshire Corrections Academy began on September 6, 2011. A total of twenty employees are participating in the pre-service training required of all newly hired Corrections staff. The breakout includes ten Corrections Officers and ten civilian employees. The officers must successfully complete the full nine-week academy while the civilian employees are only required to attend one or four weeks depending on their job responsibilities.

The Corrections Academy utilizes a combination of classroom lectures, hands-on training and simulated scenarios to better prepare the employees to work in a correctional environment on a daily basis.

The employees will participate in a daily physical fitness exercise followed by classroom lectures on topics including offender management, defensive tactics, offender classification, cross-gender supervision, investigations, communication, medical and mental health services, the Prison Rape Elimination Act, sexual harassment, suicide prevention, fire safety, radio procedures, and report writing. All staff will be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Officers will be certified in the use of firearms, Oleoresin Capsicum (pepper spray), neuromuscular incapacitation devices (Tasers), and batons.

They will graduate from the Corrections Academy on November 4, 2011. Following graduation the officers will receive their permanent work assignments. The civilian employees have already received their assignments.
