The allegation that an Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office deputy raped and kidnapped an inmate is a grave accusation -- and it's good that officials appear to be taking it seriously. Sheriff's officials said Deputy Dejuan R. Thomas was fired and arrested Friday. He was charged with aggravated rape, second-degree kidnapping and sexual malfeasance in office. An office spokesman said the agency has opened an investigation. Mr. Thomas had been employed as a deputy since September 2009 and was a prison guard at Orleans Parish Prison. As such, he had taken an oath to serve the public and wielded considerable power over inmates at the facility. The Sheriff's Office is not releasing many details on the case, citing privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation. The office would not say when the alleged crime took place, when it was reported or whether the alleged victim was the person who reported it to authorities. Read More. |
