Panel to review architects for new jail

Report finds long stays of accused a factor in facility's rising population.



The Reno County Jail Study Committee did not push Tuesday night for the top "short-term" recommendation made by National Institute of Corrections consultants:

Park a modular unit on county grounds behind the jail to provide a barrier between the inmate recreation yard and the public and offer programs for inmates inside the unit.

But the Jail Study Committee continues to pursue implementation of another recommendation: Replace the present jail.

On Friday, a subcommittee of the county group formed this year will interview people from three architectural firms vying to design a new jail. A proposed jail design will be in hand before a ballot to finance the project goes to voters in November 2012.

Other members of the Jail Study Committee were supposed to meet Thursday with Kansas Secretary of the Department of Corrections Ray Roberts to talk about using land near Hutchinson Correctional Facility for a new Reno County jail.

Reno County Commissioner Dan Deming said Roberts won't be able to come to Hutchinson for the meeting. The meeting, not yet rescheduled, probably will take place in Topeka, Deming said, and he hopes it will occur this month.
