Union Co. inmates could soon pay for their own jail time |

UNION, SC (FOX Carolina) - Some inmates in Union County may soon have to pay for their own jail time, but they'll get to work and stay at home. It's a plan by the sheriff that could be the solution to overcrowding at the jail and save taxpayers. The Union County jail is overcrowded. Sheriff David Taylor says it's built to hold 40 inmates, but it averages 64 on any given day and has housed 98 people awaiting their court sentencing. The sheriff appealed to the Union County Council, and Tuesday night, the council passed the first of three readings to allow the creation of a home detention program. Sheriff Taylor plans to contract a private monitoring company to supply ankle bracelets that can track where inmates go and alert the sheriff's office if they break court mandates. He says this is likely a temporary overcrowding fix, but it won't cost taxpayers because the inmates, who haven't bailed out, would pay.
