DEDHAM, MA, Sept. 13, 2011 – The Norfolk County Sheriff’s Office has initiated a new landscaping training program for inmates as part of its vocational education curriculum. “This landscaping training program is part of our larger inmate reentry program, which directs inmates to accept responsibility for their behavior,” Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti said. “By teaching them occupational skills, we try to eliminate the excuses we often hear about not being able to find jobs.” The program will be paid for by a private foundation grant. Norfolk County Correctional Center officials plan to launch the program this fall and continue it in the spring. The landscaping training will provide inmates with basic knowledge about lawn care, equipment use and maintenance, tree and bush pruning and proper pesticide application. The new program is the latest addition to an occupational training curriculum that includes HVAC (heating ventilation and air conditioning), HVAC electrical and culinary arts. “Virtually all of our inmates return to their communities sooner or later,” Sheriff Bellotti said. “By emphasizing accountability and responsibility during their time at the jail, we can make our communities safer in the sense that inmates do not reoffend. The goal is for them to be productive, law-abiding members of society.” |
