The New Mexico Corrections Department facilities manager who in July pleaded guilty to soliciting and taking bribes continued to collect a state check long after she was fired. This time, it’s an unemployment check. Lauri Chapman was “terminated” Feb. 24 from her job as a staff manager at the state Indian Affairs Department, according to a spokesperson at the State Personnel Office. An affidavit filed by a U.S. Marshal filed in federal court says Chapman’s applied for unemployment that same week. Albuquerque TV station KRQE captured Lauri Chapman at an April hearing where she pleaded not guilty to bribery charges. Chapman later reversed her plea and faces sentencing Oct. 28. Two months later, Chapman withdrew her entire state retirement benefit – $58,621.88. She withdrew the retirement funds on April 19, less than a week after a federal grand jury indicted her on 30 counts related to soliciting and taking bribes to award roofing contracts to Omni Development Corp. between February, 2007 and April, 2009. U.S. Marshal Dave Loyer wrote that Chapman “indicated on the claim for she did not receive, will not receive, and is not receiving payment under any type of retirement plan, pension, 401k, IRA, KEOGH, etc. based on her employment during the past 18 months.” Read More. |
