TALLAHASSEE — The Teamsters have filed an ethics complaint accusing Gov. Rick Scott of having a conflict of interest in Florida's prison privatization -- the largest effort of its kind anywhere in the country. The labor union, battling to take over representation of prison correctional workers in Florida, filed the complaint Friday with the state Commission on Ethics, saying the privatization push is flawed because Scott accepted money for his inauguration from the nation's two largest private prison companies, Boca Raton-based GEO Group and Nashville-based Corrections Corp. of America. GEO contributed $25,000 and CCA donated $5,000 to Scott's inaugural fund, "tantamount to 'pay to play politics," the complaint alleges. Scott spokesman Lane Wright said Wednesday, "There's no ethics violation here. Between two and three hundred companies and individuals donated to the inauguration fund. And that money went to the Republican Party of Florida, in total compliance with the law, not to Governor Scott directly. Besides, the prison contract is going to go to the lowest bidder, whoever that is. Governor Scott has nothing to do with the selection process." Read More. |
