Spartanburg County employees have not received pay raises in four years, but that could change if Sheriff Chuck Wright remains on the mark in trimming $1.3 million in detention center employee overtime by June 30. Photo Galleries Since the sheriff took over the jail on July 1, he's been able to save 2,355 man hours or $51,821 in employee overtime. Wright has restructured leadership at the detention center from a "top heavy" management structure, he said. The detention center previously had been managed by Jail Director Larry Powers, who reported to the county administrator. Powers now serves as the court liaison to the detention center. Maj. Neal Urch is the officer in charge of the jail with Capts. Allen Freeman and Raymond Gist overseeing everyday operations. Their job has also been to find ways to save money in the detention center's $14 million budget. By January, Wright said there will be 38 new detention officers, which will enable detention officers to work shifts similar to those that sheriff's deputies now work — three work days, two days off followed by two work days and three days off. Currently, detention officers work six, 12-hour shifts followed by two off days. The result, Wright said, has been low employee morale and officers who are tired and aren't able to spend quality time with their families. "With the way it works now, two days isn't long enough to recuperate from six, 12-hour shifts," Wright said. "The body isn't made to withstand 12-hour days for a long period of time, and our goal has been to cut that out." to Read More click here . |
