Inmates moved after stabbing

Two of the three inmates allegedly involved in the stabbing of three other inmates last Friday at the Mountainview Youth Correctional Facility in N.J. have been transferred to maximum and medium security prisons.
Department of Corrections spokesman Matt Schuman said it appears that one of the inmates used a sharpened piece of metal wrapped in a sock to stab the other three inmates. He said it is unclear what caused the fight and how the other two inmates who were transferred from Mountainview were involved.
The incident unfolded about 6 p.m. in one of the facility's large, stone cottages where all six of the inmates lived, he said.
Schuman said there are eight cottages at Mountainview with varying numbers of inmates. He said cottage No. 7, where the stabbing happened, had 83 inmates living in it.
Schuman said only one weapon was recovered.
Because of the pending investigation, no names will be released, he said.
Schuman said the inmate who appears to have stabbed the other three inmates was transferred to New State Prison in Trenton -- a maximum security prison. The other two inmates allegedly involved in the stabbing were taken to East Jersey State Prison in Rahway -- a maximum security prison -- and the Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional Facility in Bordentown, he said.
Two of the stabbed inmates were airlifted to area hospitals -- Robert Wood Johnson and Morristown Memorial hospitals, Schuman said.
Mountainview is a medium security facility that has a population of 1,236, according to May 2003 statistics.
Pending further investigation, the inmates involved in the stabbing could face additional charges, Schuman said.
