Inmates get time for harassment

Steven Schoff shot and killed a 20-year-old Kennebunk, Maine man on April 25, 1996, after meeting him that night in a Biddeford bar. Five years later, he sent the victim's mother a photo of her dead son stuffed in the trunk of a car.
On Monday, Schoff portrayed himself and his family as victims when he was sentenced to six additional months in prison for harassment.
"I have some problems with her because it's affected my family," Schoff, 32, told Justice John Atwood in Knox County Superior Court last Monday. Schoff was referring to Debbie O'Brien, the mother of Devin O'Brien, who was shot three times in a Lyman gravel pit.
The two men met that night in a Biddeford bar and O'Brien apparently asked Schoff for a ride home. He never made it there.
Schoff is serving 28 years at Maine State Prison for the murder.
In the harassment case, Schoff had an accomplice - Michael Willings, also 32, who is serving five years for aggravated criminal mischief. Both inmates were found guilty last Friday of harassment. The judge decided Schoff's case and a jury determined Willings' guilt. Willings had five months added to his sentence.
Willings mailed the Thanksgiving greeting card to Debbie O'Brien in July 2001. The card was timed to arrive on what would have been Devin's 26th birthday and included the message: "P.S. Thinking of you. Happy birthday."
Enclosed in the envelope was a crime-scene photo of Devin, which Schoff obtained from discovery materials connected to the murder case.
Under Maine law, a person who harasses someone must be legally warned not to harass before charges can be brought.
Schoff had already been ordered not to harass Debbie O'Brien for previously sending her a harassing letter. Knowing he could face charges, Schoff got Willings to mail the photo.
While addressing the court last Monday, Schoff said his 7-year-old daughter has suffered learning problems and required counseling because of Debbie O'Brien's statements.
Outside the courtroom, Jay and Debbie O'Brien said Schoff was likely referring to her testimony before the Maine Legislature several years ago supporting the death penalty.
Since her son's death, Debbie O'Brien has become active in the group "Parents of Murdered Children." The couple says they strive to bring some good out of a bad situation.
