'Non-violent' jailed moms still a possible danger

One California attorney is concerned that a new state law permitting female inmates to serve the rest of their sentence at home will put their children and other citizens at risk.

More than 4,000 female inmates convicted of lesser and non-violent crimes are expected to be released from California prisons so they can take care of their children at home. The "alternative custody program," which was signed by former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, was created to prevent children from following in the footsteps of their incarcerated parents.

As officials start carrying out the law, women offenders will be required to wear GPS tracking devices and remain under the surveillance of a parole officer. But Dean Broyles, president of The Western Center for Law & Policy, has a few issues with the new measure.

"It seems to be that the California Department of Corrections is arguing family values in a sense that there's an assumption that these women will get out of prison and be responsible and take care of their children and raise them well." But he points out that "that's not a forgone conclusion. On an individual basis, that may be true, but several of these mothers may actually get out and be more of an [instigator] or an encouragement [to] their children to enter a life of crime."
