While the Montana Department of Corrections director was not surprised that his agency received a national award for innovation, Mike Ferriter was stupefied by the presentation of the honor on Wednesday morning. His colleagues gathered in the governor’s reception room and gave a shocked Ferriter a standing ovation as he entered the room, completely unaware of what was going on as a ceremony began to present him with the 2010 Leadership Innovation Award by The Pacific Institute. “I am overwhelmed and surprised,” Ferriter told those gathered. “This is just amazing that we are recognized for our innovation,” he added. “Innovation is one of my key terms.” The other four finalists for the award were the Bank of Montreal’s Toronto branch, Azteca TV - the second largest Mexican television network, CA Technologies in New York and Banco Promerica. The Pacific Institute, based in Seattle, is a nationally recognized motivational institute that works with government and private corporations to improve performance and encourage professional growth of employees, change management and promote development of leaders. The award recognizes Ferriter’s efforts to bring the institute’s programs to many of the department’s employees and offenders under its jurisdiction. With these programs, the DOC has seen a decrease in unruly behavior and an increase in communication between staff and inmates. Many key staff members also were recognized with certificates along with inmates, who will be given their awards at the prison. Jack Fitterer, president of The Pacific Institute, said the award is given to “the person or department who really makes a difference.” Read More. |
