CO Pushing hard for a three-peat

Vince Martin took 10 days off from the gym to recuperate.

He had pushed his body to the ultimate limit, winning gold in the bench press and dead lift competitions at the 2011 World Police and Fire Games on the most humbling stage ever - New York City just days before that metropolis reflected on the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The corrections officer, whose place of work cannot be named for safety reasons, set new world records in bench press with 402.5 pounds and dead lift at 613 pounds, successfully defending his gold medals from the 2009 Games in Vancouver.

Not only was Martin battling intense weight - a combined total from his final attempts of 1,015.5 pounds - but he was battling some of the strongest emergency respondents from around the world.

"I never had that kind of competition before," said Martin, who trains at the Mamba Martial Arts Academy in Abbotsford.

"It was nice to pull off the gold and pull off two new world records. I wanted to keep the bench press reasonable, but with the dead lift I just went all out."
