The Tulare County Board of Supervisors will vote Tuesday on a plan for the county to house state prison inmates and oversee state parolees. That plan includes hiring 97 additional employees — more than half of them jail staff — to help handle the number of inmates and parolees who will be transferred here from California’s prison and parole systems as part of the state-mandated realignment. The realignment is a plan to reduce populations in the state’s crowded prisons as well as to shift some other state services — including some probation, public health and mental health services — to California’s counties to save the state money. Legislators have budgeted $354.3 million for the law enforcement portion of the plan, with Tulare County slated to get about $5.6 million. In comparison, Los Angeles County will get the biggest cut, $112.5 million, according to data provided by the California State Association of Counties. Read More. |
