RE: Who’s Running South Carolina’s Prisons? Dear Editor, Let me start by saying this: Will Folks is my friend. He and I do not always see eye to eye, but I do not abandon friendships over such differences. And, on the whole, I think that Will does a great service to our state by advancing his vision of a truly fiscally conservative agenda. I have no doubt that Will had reliable sources for his recent article about the S.C. Department of Corrections (SCD). As I know better than most, like any state agency, SCDC has its share of “rumor-mongers.” For example, in working that story, Will called me. Will had been told that I had “gotten rid of” current SCDC Deputy John Carmichael. I corrected that and Will accurately made that correction: Mr. Carmichael was never fired. He retired from SCDC to run for state office and received our state’s second highest award on his way out. The eight years that I spent at the Department of Corrections were rewarding; it was an honor to serve our state with so many dedicated and selfless employees. When I left, I told them this: “As you know, Governor-elect Nikki Haley has named Bill Byars to lead the S.C. Department of Corrections. Many of you are familiar with former Family Court Judge Byars. Governor Mark Sanford appointed him to run the Department of Juvenile Justice about the same time he put me here eight years ago. Judge Byars is a good man, and he’ll do a good job running this agency.” Read More. |
