ATTICA — A lockdown remained in effect Monday at Attica Correctional Facility. The prison was locked down Friday after a series of fights between inmates. The incidents remain under investigation. “I can’t say conclusively at this point when it actually will end, but I believe the 5-to-7 day time frame is a good working time frame,” said Peter Cutler, director of public information for the state Department of Corrections. Reports vary on the number of fights that occurred. Union officials have cited three incidents, while Cutler could confirm two, saying the state is still investigating what happened. Each incident occurred in “A” yard. One fight — which remains unconfirmed — occurred between four inmates about 9 p.m. Wednesday, union officials reported Friday. A brawl between six inmates happened about a half hour later, and was reportedly broken up with CS gas. An inmate was treated for minor injuries at Erie County Medical Center and returned to prison. A separate and unrelated fight broke out Thursday night between 26 inmates, Cutler said. It was again broken up with CS gas, and two inmates were treated for minor injuries at Wyoming County Community Hospital. About 120 inmates were in the yard during each incident. Read More. |
