The Weld County Sheriff's Office will be awarding the Sam Brownlee Medal of Valor to Corrections Officer Jerry Aguirre Jr. on Sept 28th, 2011 during the Weld County Commissioners meeting at 9:00 am at 1150 O Street. Officer Aguirre is being awarded the Medal of Valor for his actions on July 28th of 2011 when he entered a burning home to rescue the residents of the property.

Officer Aguirre was driving home from work on July 28th of 2011 when he noticed a residence burning in the area of North 11th Ave and 5th St in the City of Greeley. Officer Aguirre could hear people in the area yelling about a fire but realized that no one was taking action to ensure that residents of the burning home had been evacuated. Officer Aguirre called 9-1-1 and then immediately began pounding on the windows and doors of the home to try and determine if anyone was still inside. After getting no response, Officer Aguirre entered the home through an unlocked back door and discovered that the residence had been subdivided into apartments. Officer Aguirre ensured that no one was in the apartment he had entered, exited the structure and began looking for other entry ways into the subdivided apartments.

Officer Aguirre found an entry way to a basement apartment and instructed two men to leave the apartment who were unaware of the fire. As the two men evacuated the area, they informed Officer Aguirre of another man inside of the apartment who was later located and evacuated to safety.
