More inmates escaping FL prisons

Last night, Darius Bruck walked away from the Dismore Work Release center.

He was serving time for fleeing a law enforcement officer. As of this posting, he is listed as still on the loose. So is 27-year old Cameron Ritchie, who escaped this week from the Opa Locka Work Release Center. He was serving time for multiple convictions, including trafficking in stolen property and grand theft.

More inmates are escaping Florida prisons, according to statistics reported by the Florida Department of Corrections. Between July 2010 and June of this year, 167 inmates escaped. That’s the highest number of escapees since 1997.

Corrections officials argue the number of inmates in Florida prisons has increased greatly, and so has the number of inmates in work release programs.

“In 2001 approximately 2,250 inmates were assigned to a center. There were approximately 3,850 assigned to a center in 2010,” said Jo Ellyn Rackleff, spokesperson for the Florida Department of Corrections.

There’s no doubt the prison population is increasing. Back in 1990, the average prison population in Florida was just over 40,000 inmates. Today, it’s just over 100,000.

But statistics from the Department of Corrections show the percentage of inmates escaping is increasing, too. 1.67 out of 1,000 inmates escaped in the last year. That’s the highest rate since 1999.
