An alleged al Qaeda terrorist planned to fly explosive-packed, remote-controlled model planes into the Pentagon and the Capitol building in Washington DC, the FBI claimed today.

Rezwan Ferdaus, 26, a US citizen, has also been charged with attempting to supply materials to the terror group and helping launch attacks on American soldiers.

He was arrested in Boston yesterday after undercover agents delivered materials he had allegedly requested, including grenades, six machineguns and 24lb of what he believed was C4 explosive.

After a brief appearance in court he was remanded in custody until a second hearing on Monday. He could face 55 years in prison.

US authorities said the physics graduate intended to pack 5lb of explosives into three model planes. The FBI claimed Ferdaus believed the planes - which could be guided by GPS and fly faster than 100mph - would blow the Capitol building to "smithereens".

He then planned a follow-up attack with six people divided into two teams, all armed with automatic weapons.
