Pennsylvania inmates housed at VA DOC's Green Rock Correctional Center
By COMMONWEALTH of VIRGINIA Department of Corrections
Published: 09/30/2011

The Department has received informal notice from the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections of their intent to transfer their inmates back to Pennsylvania. However, the contract requires 180 days written notice to terminate. The written notice has not yet been received. There will probably be much speculation regarding the impact of this decision and our desire is to provide you with the information we have and can release. The transfer of the Pennsylvania inmates from Virginia will place the Department in a difficult financial situation. The revenue from out of state inmates not only pays for the operation of Green Rock, it also provides funding to other inmate beds. Let me re-emphasize we have not received the required written notice, but we have every reason to believe it will be forthcoming. Should withdrawal of out of state inmates occur, the Department will devise strategies to replace the lost revenue which may include a request for funding from the 2012 General Assembly, significant reductions in our current operations or continued pursuit of placement of other out of state offenders. The goal of this correspondence is to keep you informed, not to raise anxiety or stress. The rumor mill should not be your source of information. We will keep you informed as decisions are made.
